Yes — digital marketing is completely legit. It’s just marketing done where your customers already are: Google, social media, email, and your website. What’s NOT always legit is the industry that sells it. Digital marketing works. Plenty of the people selling it are running snake oil.
I can say that because I run a digital marketing agency, and I complain about my own industry constantly. Ask my wife.
So let me untangle the two things people mix up: the strategy (real) and the sales pitch (often garbage).
Why the industry feels like a scam
Here’s the uncomfortable truth. There are no qualifications to start a marketing agency. None. Anybody can watch a weekend of YouTube, build a Squarespace site, and call themselves an “expert” by Monday.
The field is unregulated and it’s money-hungry. That combination attracts a specific kind of person — the “marketing bro” who talks fast, promises the moon, and disappears once the invoice clears.
And they love selling the stuff you can’t easily check. SEO is the classic. It’s complex, it takes months to show results, so shady agencies sell it for high dollar, do a burst of work up front, and then coast. You keep paying. Nothing keeps happening. It suuuucks.
So when people ask “is digital marketing legit,” what they’re usually really asking is: “Am I about to get ripped off again?”
How to tell the real thing from the snake oil
Fair question. Here’s what I tell people to look for.
They give you ownership. You should have login access to your website, your domain, and your ad accounts. If they keep you locked out, walk away. If you can’t access it, you don’t own it.
They explain things in plain English. A legit marketer can explain what they’re doing so you understand it. When someone hides behind jargon and complicated dashboards, it’s often because the jargon is the product.
They talk about relevance, not just rankings. I tell clients “relevance over rankings” all the time. Anyone promising to get you to #1 on Google for everything is selling a vanity number, not customers.
No crazy lock-in. Confident marketers earn your business month to month. A long, ironclad contract is often a way to keep charging you after the results stop.
They’ll tell you when you DON’T need something. Some of the most trust-building conversations I have end with me telling a business owner they don’t need to hire us yet. That honesty is the tell.
Does it actually work?
It does — when it’s done for humans instead of for algorithms. I’ve watched a scrappy local business outperform a national competitor because they answered the phone, showed up in local search, and made real promises they actually kept.
That last part matters. You cannot out-market a bad experience. I’ve seen companies crush it for two years on great ads, then vanish almost overnight because enough people got burned. Good marketing gets people in the door. Honesty is what keeps them.
So yes, digital marketing is legit. Your job isn’t to figure out whether it works. Your job is to find someone honest to do it.
If you’ve been burned before and you’re gun-shy, I get it. Reach out to me and my team and we’ll give you a straight assessment — no pressure, no jargon wall.
