A digital marketing agency helps a small business get found online and get chosen. In practice, that means building and maintaining your website, improving where you show up on Google (SEO), running your paid ads, managing your social media and reviews, and creating content — so you can run your business instead of babysitting algorithms at 11 p.m.

That’s the short version. Here’s the honest version.

I own a marketing agency in Oregon, and most of the people who call us aren’t marketers. They’re plumbers, dentists, adventure guides, shop owners. They’re good at the thing they do. They are NOT good at — and don’t want to be good at — meta descriptions, ad bidding, and DNS records.

That’s the whole point of an agency. You hand off the monster so you can go do your actual job.

The stuff a good agency actually handles

Let me demystify it. “Digital marketing” sounds like one thing. It’s really a stack of jobs that used to belong to five different people.

Your website. This is your digital storefront. A good agency builds it to load fast, work on a phone (for most businesses, 80% of your traffic is mobile), and be found by Google. Pretty isn’t the goal. Getting chosen is.

SEO — getting found on search. When someone types “electrician near me,” you want to be on that first page. SEO is the ongoing work of making that happen. I call a business nobody can find online a “Bigfoot business.” Legend says you exist, but nobody can actually find you.

Paid ads. Google Ads and social ads put you in front of people right now, while the SEO work is still cooking. Done right, it’s a money maker. Done wrong, it’s a money fire.

Content and social. Blog posts, service pages, the stuff you put on Google and social media. This is what tells Google you’re active and relevant, and it’s what answers the questions your customers are actually asking.

Reputation and reporting. Reviews, your Google Business Profile, and someone actually telling you what’s working instead of hiding behind a dashboard you don’t understand.

What a good one does that a bad one doesn’t

Here’s where I get blunt, because the industry earns it.

The digital marketing world is full of “marketing bros” who watched a few YouTube videos and started calling themselves experts. It’s unregulated. It’s money-hungry. And the small business owner is the target.

A good agency does the opposite of that. We call it “marketing for humans.” That means clear communication, being available when you call, and not locking you into a contract you can’t get out of. The number one complaint I hear about the last agency someone hired? “They stopped answering the phone.”

A good agency also gives you ownership. If you can’t log in to your own website, domain, and ad accounts, you don’t really own them. Access equals ownership. Any agency that won’t give you access to your own stuff is a red flag the size of a barn.

Do you have to hand off everything?

No. Some owners want us to run the whole thing. Others want us to build the foundation and coach them so their team can handle the day-to-day. Both are fine. The goal isn’t to make you dependent on us forever — it’s to make your online presence NOT suck.

If you’re drowning in the digital side and it’s pulling you away from the work that actually makes you money, that’s the signal an agency is worth it.

If you want, reach out to me and my team. We’ll take a look at what you’ve got and tell you straight whether you even need us. Either way, don’t stay a Bigfoot business.
